Dice una frase popular que nunca es demasiado tarde y los alcohólicos anónimos suelen decirle a los recién llegados que nunca antes y nunca después, sino que cada uno tiene su propio tiempo y, en ocasiones, éste es incomprensible para la gente que le rodea, que en muchas veces tienen urgencia o están muy desgastados por la enfermedad del adicto.

En este sentido, existen diferentes opiniones respecto de cuándo es el mejor momento para que un adicto pueda recibir ayuda.

Hay quienes dicen que es necesario que “toque fondo”, sobre todo en los grupos de ayuda mutua o en algunos padrinos algo ortodoxos de la vieja guardia, lo cual, cómo especialista profesional, no podríamos avalar en virtud de que ese abismo en ocasiones puede evitarse y hacerse alguna intervención temprana para evitarle más sufrimiento al paciente.

Algunos otros dicen que debe priorizarse la prevención temprana, lo cual tampoco necesariamente es una solución universal, en virtud de que hay factores de riesgo que pueden propiciar que la persona desarrolle la enfermedad.

Quizás sea un tema controversial para saber el tiempo correcto para hacer algo, a tal grado que es común escuchar a pacientes recuperados lamentarse de no haberlo hecho antes, o bien, algunos que consideran demasiado tarde para estar buscando una solución.

Lo que yo podría decir, basado en la información de que las adicciones no respetan edad, sexo, condición social, profesión, ideología, credo, ni raza, aunque si bien es cierto que existen estadísticas que pueden ser indicadores para trabajar en la prevención, orientación o tratamiento, lo cierto es que cada caso es único e irrepetible y lo importante es que toda persona pueda encontrar una solución para la adicción, sin importar el tiempo o circunstancia.

En este sentido, también es importante hacerle sentir al prospecto que no importa lo que haya hecho en su historia de vida, quien sea, qué tan bajo haya caído o que tan desesperanzado esté, siempre hay una oportunidad si se busca la ayuda adecuada y se siguen las sugerencias para la recuperación.
