Interesante domingo el de ayer, después del “puente” norteamericano que celebró el pasado jueves el Día de Acción de Gracias, que nos lleva a reflexionar sobre todas las bendiciones de todo tipo recibidas y, unos días antes de que celebremos este 30 de noviembre el Día Internacional de la lucha contra los Trastornos de la Conducta Alimentaria (TCA), que desafortunadamente aumenta en sus casos y sigue siendo, al igual que las adicciones, motivo de tabúes, mitos y estigmas.

Antes de describir brevemente qué son y cuáles son los principales padecimientos de estos trastornos que tiene que ver con el rechazo de la imagen corporal y una forma disfuncional de comer, uniendo ambos temas que este fin de semana me inspiraron a escribir mi colaboración del lunes, comienzo por sugerir una declaración que todos deberíamos hacer cada día en las mañanas, en las noches y cada que nos demos cuenta de que estamos vivos: me acepto como soy y doy las gracias por ello.

Relativo al Día de Gracias, aunque es una celebración norteamericana, cada vez más personas en nuestro país, sin necesidad de hacerla una fiesta o ritual anual, tomamos consciencia de la importancia de que, así sea ese jueves que celebran nuestros países vecinos o cualquier día del año, la gratitud es una poderosa llave que no sólo nos regala paz y quietud a pesar de las circunstancias externas que no siempre son como deseamos, sino que además nos abre la puerta de continuar recibiendo mucho más de todo lo que agradecemos.

Es por ello que soy un convencido de que dar gracias por la vida, por la salud, por nuestro cuerpo, por nuestra edad, por nuestra familia, por nuestras actividades productivas, por cada situación que la vida nos presenta, por la provisión continua y por el gozo por vivir, es una maravillosa forma de estar en paz y en armonía interior, independientemente de cómo esté el exterior y lo que no está en nuestras manos resolver.

Además de aceptación y rendición espiritual ante los reclamos que pudiéramos hacer por lo que no nos parece, la gratitud nos brinda una gran dosis de autoestima y amor propio que muchas veces los seres humanos perdemos a lo largo de diferentes etapas de nuestras vidas.

Entre esas personas que han perdido su autoestima, que en algún momento de sus vidas se sintieron rechazadas, que tienen una enorme necesidad de aprobación y aceptación externa, se encuentran las que desarrollan alguno de los trastornos de la conducta alimentaria, dentro de los que destacan la anorexia nerviosa, la bulimia nerviosa y la compulsión por la comida o trastorno por atracón, aunque en la actualidad existen algunas otras categorías.

Esta enfermedad mental que debe ser atendida por profesionales y comprendida por todos los que rodean a una persona que presenta esta condición, sin estigmas y con mucha empatía, tiene diversos orígenes por lo que se le considera multicausal, de igual manera que afecta la mente, las emociones, las relaciones y al organismo físico de quien la ha desarrollado.

Un común denominador de quienes los padecen, es la dismorfia corporal relacionada con la talla, la forma y el peso de la persona que suele rechazarse permanentemente, independientemente de la herida emocional, los rasgos congénitos o los factores de riesgo, incluyendo la imposición de estereotipos físicos “atractivos” o “desagradables”, que hayan generado el desarrollo de la enfermedad.

Desafortunadamente los factores de riesgo para lastimar a quienes tienen proclividad a estos trastornos, existen como una fuerte influencia social y mediática que etiquetan a las personas por sus características físicas, incluyendo el exceso de peso, mejor conocido como gordofobia, además de una cultura que define a la belleza según los cánones de las modas que más allá del marketing, es muy difícil de alcanzar para cualquiera, fuera de los modelos de esa publicidad persuasiva y generalmente manipuladora.

Por ello, más allá de una conmemoración anual para que el mundo reflexione sobre el combate a estos trastornos, me parece que deberíamos de hacer una profunda evaluación de lo nocivo que son los factores de riesgo relacionados a la imagen corporal y la manipulación de una cultura del “wellness” que a través de la imposición de estereotipos sociales está dañando sobre todo al sector más vulnerable de la población que son los jóvenes.

Debemos corregir el discurso y sí, promover la salud que proviene de una vida físicamente activa y de una alimentación adecuada, sin evidenciar el rechazo hacia quienes no “cumplen los estándares” de aceptación o aprobación social, además de, por supuesto, estar muy atentos para orientar, prevenir, atender y tratar a quienes desafortunadamente desarrollan algún TCA, respetando su dignidad como personas, entendiendo que no levantaron la mano para padecer una enfermedad así y teniendo mucha empatía hacia su condición.

Dejemos de cosificar a las personas, de rechazar a quienes no cumplen los estándares y de enseñarnos entre todos que lo único que tenemos es nuestro cuerpo y nuestra salud física, mental y emocional, por lo qué hay que aprender a amarnos y aceptarnos tal y como somos, dejando de rechazarnos a nosotros mismos.

Me acepto como soy y doy las gracias por ello, luego entonces, cuido mi autoestima y mi salud integral como un derecho inherente a mi condición humana.
